News & April Updates

Dearest gentle reader,

I have dillied and dallied for the last few weeks, pushing this newsletter aside, never feeling ready to write my novel. Not that I am now. It takes a long moment of silence to sit down and write; lots of thoughts and ideas circling up there, but never a quiet moment.

So here we are, already in April!

Over the last month or so, I’ve been racking my brain about this business, trying to get it right! It’s my 4th business. Wedding cakes in Montreal, then chocolates in SF, and Ariella Ceramics in NY, Slip Studio feels like an amalgamation of them all. I’m trying to use everything I’ve learned along the way. I may not be going to wedding trade shows or The Fancy Food Show, but this isn’t that far off.

Hobby Jobs – I like to call them. I haven’t been able to unhitch myself from them. I pick jobs (not careers) that seem cutesy and fun-looking (from the outside). Jobs that have a reputation of being “easy”, anyone can do them. “You must love what you do” – jobs. “You must not be doing it for the money” – jobs. Businesses with small margins. lol

This is NOT on purpose, of course. I do like to make money. I think this is precisely *why I like these kinds of jobs. It’s an adult version of a lemonade stand. Think back to how excited you were when someone paid you a nickel, a dime, or a dollar for something you made with your hands. YOU made it. Not a computer, or someone down the hall. YOU.

This is why I like working with my hands. It’s satisfying. Skilled trade jobs tap into a part of ourselves beyond the bottom line; they satisfy our human nature in many different ways. I’ve known this all along, but a quick Google search will easily confirm that “working with your hands is rewarding because it acts as a ‘behaviorceutical’, using physical labor to directly improve mental health, reduce stress, and boost brain function” – Psychology Today.

Working with your hands is good for your soul- come into Slip Studio and give it a try!

Changes!!!

I decided to cancel my kids’ clay camp for the summer. Maybe I’m just too new to the camp fold, because I only got one sign-up after all those promos and plugs! I think a cooking + clay camp is an awesome idea, maybe next year?!

Why are we so focused on kids time anyway? Adults are the ones who need more fun!

I’ll be dedicating this spring and summer to perfecting what’s working: classes and workshops!

Make something in one-go. A berry bowl, a mug, a cheese plate or candle holder, a chess board, or a planter. In a workshop, you’ll make something from start to finish in a 2hr-2 1/2hrs. I’ll fire and glaze your pieces for you.

Or better yet, come back into the studio for [new] Drop-in Studio Time and glaze your piece just the way you like it!
