From Pastry Chef to Pottery Artist:

The Story of Slip Studio

I am a classically trained pastry chef turned ceramic artist, and this is my story.  founder of Slip Studio, in White Plains, NY, a pottery studio focused on hand-building classes, workshops, and creative community.

I’m a classically trained Pastry Chef with a love of making, cooking and eating. After college, I moved to Paris and went to cooking school at Le Cordon Bleu. It was 1997 and cooking school was not yet a thing, but I did it anyway, because food is my thing. I stuck around Paris and worked at Fauchon and did the French 4star restaurant thing in NYC. Eventually, I grew tired of the long hours and wanted a more balanced life. I started Cocoa Designs in San Francisco, got married, and the rest is history.

Food has always been my thing.

Pottery became my thing as I grew my family and started searching for a more balanced life.  I started ceramics in 2014, with three little kiddos and a tiny pocket of time.  It wasn’t until COVID struck that I delved deeper into pottery. I slowly grew my home studio and started selling my work, Ariella Ceramics was born in late 2021.

After training at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and working my way through pastry kitchens in Montreal, NYC, and SF, I shifted toward a more sustainable creative life.   I discovered pottery in 2014 while raising three young children, and built a home studio. Ariella Ceramics was born in 2021 and grew into Slip Studio.

Life moves slowly and takes giants leaps all at the same time, and here I am opening my first pottery studio in the heart of White Plains, serving the Westchester community. Slip Studio is a dedicated workspace, a labor of love of food and pottery, clay and art, mindfulness and community.

I hope you can join me in this new adventure!

My experience at Slip Shop exceeded my expectations. Took a Tile Mug workshop and cannot believe how beautifully it turned out. The shop is roomy and inviting; it was so organized, I felt immediately comfortable to set up a work area. Firstly, … More I engaged in some light chatter with friendly strangers sharing lovely charcuterie and beverages. Ariella made her own bread; yes please! Back to the clay: there are works to inspire, some finished and works in progress. I saw uniquely designed platters that make me want to sign up for a series of classes so I can make my own. Great experience!

I had a great time at a mom’s night out, learning how to design and paint a plate, chatting with other moms and eating delicious snacks. The studio is new and inviting. Ariella led a great session that was relaxed and insightful with design … More ideas and techniques. I will be back

This is an amazing new studio and I am so happy that it is close to my home. I took my kids - three different ages - to family clay day on a day off of school. The studio is beautiful, clean and comfy. Really nice. Ariella was helpful in … More the planning of the projects, was supportive giving tips and ideas. The kids all commented on how nice she is! There was lovely conversation with everyone. It was just a great experience. I could have spent another hour or two there. My hope is for my daughter to join one of her classes, and for me to join an adult class. We all felt right at home there. Ariella is a very talented artist and teacher.

I joined Ariella’s studio about 10 months ago as a complete beginner, and it has been one of the best things I’ve done for myself.
I never expected that I’d be able to make the things I’m making now. I also didn’t think I would make friends … More at the studio or that the studio would become such a meaningful place for me.
What I love most is the balance between guidance and freedom. Ariella is always there when you need help, but she also gives you the space to explore, experiment, and develop your own creativity.
If you’re the kind of person who learns by doing rather than sitting through long lectures, this is the perfect place. It’s relaxed, supportive, inspiring, and just so much fun.
I came here hoping to learn ceramics, but I’ve gained so much more than that. ❤️

There are few teachers like Ariella. She brings confidence and fun to every class, making the work feel both joyful and approachable. Whenever I made a mistake, she showed me simple, effective ways to fix it, so I didn’t have to start from … More scratch. Those small, smart tips helped me grow because I could build on what I’d already learned instead of beginning again each time.
Ariella is not only a beautiful artist but also a gifted teacher and a genuinely kind person. Her calm energy and passion for what she does are absolutely contagious. I can’t wait to take another class with her; it’s truly my happy place.
