Handbuild Your Own Ceramic Matcha Bowl (Chawan)

- Description
Looking for a date night or a mom's night out? This is a casual workshop, no experience necessary! Bring your creativity and your friends for a mindful evening and a chance to unplug. Slip Studio is a top-tier activity for couples in Westchester County.
Immerse yourself in the mindful intersection of Japanese tea culture and clay at Slip Studio in White Plains. Join our Handbuild Your Own Matcha Bowl (Chawan) Workshop—a specialized pottery session where you will craft the heart of the tea ceremony using premium brown stoneware clay.
While you build, enjoy a complete Japanese cultural experience with Matcha tea tastings and delicious Japanese cream puffs from Cream Bomb NYC.
The Creative Journey:
The Chawan Philosophy: More than just a vessel, the Chawan represents wabi-sabi—finding beauty in unique, organic imperfections. We focus on heart and soul rather than machine-made perfection.
Expert Construction: Using the traditional coil-building method, you’ll create a 5" wide bowl with walls thick enough to retain heat, but a base wide enough for vigorous, frothy whisking.
Functional Details: Learn to attach a sturdy base and foot, and craft a tapered rim or spout for the perfect sip or pour.
Matcha Mastery: As a former pastry chef, Ariella will demonstrate the proper way to prepare and whisk matcha at home.
Workshop Highlights:
All materials, clay, tools, and professional glaze firing are included.
Food & Drink: Matcha demonstration, Japanese cream puffs, and snacks provided.
Pickup: Your bowls will be ready for pickup at our White Plains studio in 4–6 weeks.
Located in Westchester County, Slip Studio is a top-tier activity for couples and friends looking for unique things to do near Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, and Greenwich.
A matcha demonstration and tasting will be provided, as well as a selection of hot teas, Japanese cream puffs from Cream Bomb NYC, and Japanese crunchy snacks for a complete night out!

A Note on the Magic of Ceramics
- PLEASE NOTE: There are no guarantees in pottery! While working in clay is meditative and gratifying, it is also beautifully unpredictable. Clay moves, shifts, and sometimes cracks as it dries or during the firing process—even for the most experienced potters. This is the "magic" of ceramics: learning to let go, accepting that we aren't always in control, and finding beauty in the process.
- We invite you to enjoy the experience as the most important part of your visit; the final product is simply the icing on the cake!
