I tried my hand at Kintsugi a few years back after I broke the smaller bowl of a chip-and-dip set I bought in Santa Barbara over 15 years ago. This was long before I knew the difference between wood/gas/electric firings, and before I could really appreciate the beauty of handmade pottery. What drew me to this set was the size of the larger bowl- wide and low, perfect to serve just about anything. If you've ever been to my house, you've seen it! It's a staple on my dining room table.
All of this is to say.... I did a poor job of reassembling the broken salsa bowl. It sits somewhere in my garage, reminding me that I need to learn about Kintsugi for real. It's an art form for people like me; buttery fingers and a pile of favorite pieces waiting for repair!
For those of you who don't know, Kintsugi is a centuries-old Japanese art form of repairing broken pottery with gold. Embracing imperfections, accepting change, and highlighting cracks and fissures.
Kintsugi has a lot to teach us about living a wabi sabi kind of life.
Kintsugi Workshop
Thursday, May 14th @ 7pm
I'm excited to invite Tara deLuca from HV Kintsugi for a workshop at Slip Studio. If you have a broken piece (chipped or shattered) - bring it in!
If you don't, Tara will supply you with a perfect bowl that you'll shatter and bring back to life. It's going to be fun!!!
