  • Description
This is a special 6-week-long course focusing on the design and technique of Nerikomi pottery, using colored clay.  Each week, students will learn a new style while working on a variety of projects using a custom palette of colored clay.
 
David Jo from Flint and Marble will be teaching students the art of Nerikomi through the following principles:
  • Coloring the Clay: Learn how to mix ceramic stains, oxides, and various natural clays into a base clay body.
  • Building the Pattern: Slices of colored clay are combined, stacked, and compressed into larger blocks or "canes". 
  • Slicing and Assembling: The clay block is sliced into cross-sections, revealing the hidden pattern. 
  • Finishing: Once the piece is completely dry, it is bisque-fired and finished with a clear, transparent glaze to showcase the natural colors of the layered clay.
  • Fall I: Learning the basics, open to beginners!  / Fall II: Take two steps back and learn how to mix your own colored clay!
 

Friday mornings from 10:30 am - 1pm

Fall II session runs from November 6th - Dec 18th (no class Thanksgiving week)

  • A maximum of 8 students per class
  • Access to all studio tools, molds, slab roller, and materials in the studio
  • Additional firing fees of 8 cents per cubic inch for all pieces made during class time, paid as you go online
  • Missed classes can be made up during afternoon studio time (Tues-Fri 2-5 pm) within the scheduled session
  • Note: The class price reflects the elevated price of using mason stains, as well as the time and effort in mixing our own colored clay

David Jo is the founder and artist behind Flint and Marble, creating contemporary nerikomi ceramics inspired by seasonal color palettes and the quiet beauty of nature. Each piece is hand-built from layers of colored clay, making every work completely unique.

  • Hand building in Clay - Tuesday pm

    This is a project-based class for beginners and intermediate artists.  Each week, we will focus on a particular technique in handbuilding and surface decoration, creating unique pieces for your home and table. Classes run for 3 hours and allow students to develop their own projects, carrying them over from week to week.

    This hands-on class introducing students to Nerikomi, a decorative hand building technique using layered and patterned colored clay. Students will learn how to build and slice patterned clay blocks and apply them to a simple slab-built form, resulting in a one-of-a-kind functional piece. The class is beginner-friendly and open to all experience levels.
