Make Your Own Garden Markers

Create your own garden markers for seedlings, herbs, and small plants in your garden and patio.  You'll make 8-12 ceramic garden markers- a sweet addition to your garden and a wonderful gift for friends and family.

The Process:

*Learn how to roll the perfect slab of white stoneware
*Using colored underglazes, paint any design over your slab
*Stamp letters or add any features to your garden markers
*And finally cut them into any desired shape
*All materials, clay, and tools are included 
*This workshop will last 2-2 1/2 hours
*Pick-up of your finished pieces at Slip Studio 4-6 weeks after class

Get your garden ready for the season at Slip Studio in White Plains! Join us for our seasonal Ceramic Garden Markers Workshop, where you will hand-build a custom set of weather-resistant stoneware labels for your herbs, flowers, and vegetables.

In this 2-hour creative session, you will create a collection of handmade garden markers that are as durable as they are beautiful. These aren't just functional; they are a charming addition to any raised bed, patio pot, or indoor herb garden.

The Creative Process:

  • Slab Building: Learn to roll out and cut professional-grade stoneware clay into various marker shapes.

  • Sgraffito & Lettering: Use sgrafitto tools to carve the names of your favorite plants (Basil, Tomatoes, Lavender, etc.) and add decorative floral or geometric patterns.

  • Custom Finishing: Personalize your set with colorful underglazes to match your garden’s aesthetic.

  • Durability: Your markers will be high-fired to ensure they withstand the elements all season long.

  • All materials, clay, tools, and professional firing are included.

  • Your markers will be ready for pickup in 4–6 weeks—just in time for peak planting season!

  • Perfect for: Garden enthusiasts, DIY decorators, or a unique Mother's Day experience.

Tea, coffee, and sparkling water provided. No prior pottery experience required!

Studio Logistics & Policies

  • Space is Limited: Our studio is intimate; workshops are capped at 12 guests unless otherwise specified.

  • Arrival: Please arrive on time. To ensure everyone completes their project, guests arriving more than 30 minutes late may be unable to finish. Ariella will do her best to accommodate and assist with repairs to ensure your work survives the kiln.

  • Dress Code: Please come dressed to get your hands (and potentially your clothes) a little dirty!

  • Amenities: Parking is free and plentiful. Clean restrooms are located just across the hall.

Cancellations & Refunds

  • Policy: A 50% refund is available with written cancellation up to 1 week before the workshop. Cancellations made less than 1 week prior are non-refundable.

  • Rescheduling: Rescheduling due to illness is permitted once.

A Note on the Magic of Ceramics

  • PLEASE NOTE: There are no guarantees in pottery! While working in clay is meditative and gratifying, it is also beautifully unpredictable. Clay moves, shifts, and sometimes cracks as it dries or during the firing process—even for the most experienced potters. This is the "magic" of ceramics: learning to let go, accepting that we aren't always in control, and finding beauty in the process.
  • We invite you to enjoy the experience as the most important part of your visit; the final product is simply the icing on the cake!

    Carve your own jewelry dish out of brown stoneware clay.  This is a mindful and calming exercise of slowly carving clay out of a thick slab of clay and creating divets, crevaces and grooves for you to store your rings, jewelry, and trinkets.  Ariella will guide you through the whole process, creating a true slow-art experience.  Once you are done, Ariella will then monitor your pieces as they dry slowly, fire and glaze them in your choice of the colorful glazes.  Your beautiful dishes will be ready for pick-up 4-6 weeks later.

    Unplug and create: a screen-free Sunday for the whole family. Bring the kids to the studio for a tactile, hands-on experience. Our Family Clay Date is designed for parents and children (ages 8+) to connect through the messy, joyful art of handbuilding.  Family Clay Date is a 2hr clay workshop for you and your kids to do together!  Tickets are sold separately, per person.

  • Intermediate Handbuilding - Thursday Mornings

    $630.00
    If you're familiar with basic handbuilding techniques but interested in learning more, this class is for you.  Work on more complex projects with closer attention to detail, construction, and surface decoration.  This class is an open studio format, explore your own projects with personalized attention and support. Full studio access, including all tools, slab roller, extruder, and molds, as well as clay, slips, and underglazes.

    This class will take place on Thursday mornings from 10am to 1pm.  Classes will run on April 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28, June 4, 11.

  • Pasta + Boards Pottery Workshop

    I'm excited to welcome my good friend and amazing cooking instructor, Kate Solomon to Slip Studio for a homemade pasta workshop!

    Join us for a unique pasta & pottery workshop where culinary meets craft. Ariella will be partnering with Kate for an interactive workshop. It's all about PASTA for this 2-hour hands-on class!

    Part 1: We'll be talking about pasta; Kate will demonstrate kneading homemade pasta dough, rolling, and shaping pasta in the traditional way.  No machines, just hands and know-how, Kate will guide us through techniques for classic shapes like orecchiette and cavatelli, focusing on the perfect texture and sauce pairing.

    Part 2: Pottery time!  With a ready-made slab of brown stoneware clay, Ariella will walk you through carving your own ceramic texture board (rigate board).  You’ll learn about carving into clay for texture and relief. This is a mindful and calming experience.  Your ceramic pasta board will dry slowly, and Ariella will fire and glaze them in your choice of our studio-made glazes, ready for pick-up 4-6 weeks later.

    Part 3: And finally, we eat!  Once we are all done working, we'll sit down and enjoy a delightful dinner prepared by Kate (and moi). Pasta, of course, with two different sauces, plus some salads/sides/ cheese/ wine.  You get the drift, it'll be a delicious sit-down meal for us to enjoy together.
