A very special pottery workshop introducing the wonders of wood-fired ceramics! Ceramic artist Roger Bauman is welcoming us to his giant wood kiln in the woods.  Your pieces will be fired in Roger's kiln for 5 days (24hours/day), either in the Anagama or the back chamber.   Wood firing is a magical experience of steady and intense heat (reaching over 2300+ degF); ash, glaze, and fire combine to create an atmospheric firing like no other.  

This is a two-part workshop: Friday, March 6th, from 10-1 pm AND Thursday, March 19th, from 2-5 pm.

Friday, March 6th: at Slip Studio we'll have a 3 hr workshop handbuilding with cone 10 clay.  Make two things from start to finish: 2 mugs, 2 bowls, 2 cups, or any 2 pieces smaller than 6" x 6".  I'll then bisque fire your work, ready for day two.

Thursday, March 19th: we'll take a field trip to Roger Bauman's wood kiln up in Peekskill. You can ride with me or meet me there. We'll get a chance to look around and visit his giant wood. We will also glaze our pieces and get them ready for the wood fire.

If you can't make it to the field trip part of this workshop, I am happy to take your pieces for you.  Once the wood fire is complete and unloaded, I will bring your pieces back to Slip Studio for pick-up.

Nerikomi Pottery Workshop: Master Colored Clay Techniques

A Special Handbuilding Class with David Jo of Flint & Marble

Slip Studio is proud to host local Westchester artists like David Jo. Our studio in White Plains is a hub for specialized pottery techniques, serving students from Harrison, Greenwich, and Scarsdale looking for unique clay experiences.

This hands-on class introduces students to nerikomi, a decorative handbuilding technique using layered and patterned colored clay. Students will learn how to build and slice patterned clay blocks and apply them to a simple slab-built form, resulting in a one-of-a-kind functional piece. The class is beginner-friendly and open to all experience levels.

This session will feature David's March palette, Stone Thaw — soft mineral tones inspired by late winter thaw, including celadon, jade green, smoky gray, wedgwood blue, and blackberry wine, balanced with natural white.

Kids Clay Camp Week 6 - Aug 10-14th - Pasta. Pasta. Pasta

Pasta. Fusili. Macaroni.  Noodles. Ramen. Spaghetti.  You name it... We’re making it! We’ll be using our giant playdough machine (aka wall extruder) and making dough out of clay.  Macaroni [clay] and pasta bowls. Ramen bowls and chopstick holders. Plus a little homegrown [edible] pesto pasta.  Clay and pasta meet for a delicious week of fun!

Each week, two camp sessions will be offered: lower school mornings from 9:30 am-12:30 pm for kids in 3rd-5th grade and middle school afternoons from 1:30-4:30 pm for kids in 6th-8th grade. As you can tell, this will be a favorite week for many, chocolate! Dark, milk, and white, we’ll be layering clay and making imprints and checkerboards using brown and white clay. Chocolate fondue, anyone? Yes, please! How about a mug cake? First, we’ll have to build our own mug, then we’ll have to test the recipes (of course:)).

This week is all about PLAY! Make your favorite characters and game pieces, and let’s create some stop motion videos.  Minecraft boxes, chess and checker game pieces, tic-tac-toe boards, and volcanoes. We’ll even make a mug decorated with your favorite anime characters.

This week *everything* will be cutesie and tiny!! We’ll be working [small] and making jellycat magnets, beads, and teensy tiny, little things... plus jewelry and ring dishes for all of your keepsakes. Transfers, textures, decals and cutters, wires and weaving, and even a little gold luster if we can fire our pieces in time!

Have you always wondered how some handmade ceramics are covered in gold? 

In this workshop, you'll learn how to apply gold and silver water transfers to your finished pieces.  This is a special third firing your pieces will undergo in the kiln. Bring up to 6 glazed pieces, ready to go.  Any finished pieces fired to cone 5+ will work.  You can also bring in already luster-painted pieces, but please note NO liquid luster will be applied in the studio! Your pieces will be loaded in the kiln and fired right away, ready for pick-up on March 16th. Luster pieces will NOT be microwave safe.

Luster Workshop - Fri March 13th, from 12-2 pm.

• Bring up to 6 glazed and finished pieces
• Pieces can be previously fired to cone 5 - cone 10
• Liquid luster to be painted on at home (outside of the studio)
• Use of gold/silver/mother of pearl luster decals on hand in the studio 
• Use of third firing overglaze decals on hand in the studio
• Pieces will be fired that day and ready for pick up on March 16th

Our studio is small, and space is limited to a maximum of 12 guests (unless otherwise specified).

Parking is free and plentiful. Bathrooms are clean and across the hall. Please come dressed and ready to get your hands and maybe even your clothes a little dirty.

Ariella will do her best to accommodate for lateness and skill level, repairing work when she can to ensure the highest likelihood of survival through the kiln process.

While working in clay is calming, pottery comes with many unknowns. Pottery is unpredictable and sometimes unforgiving. While Ariella will do her best to walk you through each step of the process, sometimes cracks and issues present themselves along the way. Either in the soft and malleable stage, or as the piece dries and hardens, and even into the bisqueware stage, clay moves and shifts. Even the best potters cannot predict the outcome, so please keep this in mind! Working in clay is meditative and gratifying; however, it is also humbling, as there are many factors out of our control.  This is the magic of ceramics- learning to let go and allowing for the process to guide you, and accepting that we are not always in control. This is the beauty of clay.  So enjoy the workshop, class, or private event, and remember that the experience IS the best part of pottery!  The final product is just the icing on the cake:).

In this hands-on workshop, you'll get a chance to glaze your very own Test Tile Mug.  Choose from a variety of bisque-fired mugs, each one individually shaped. You'll then use your own aesthetic to design your mug using tape resist as a decorating method, in creating a bright and colorful mug.

The Process:

• Choose from a selection of handmade mugs made out of brown stoneware - each one a little different
• Start designing your mug using crafting tape for glaze-resist and to block shapes and patterns
• Learn how to glaze the interior of your mug in clear food-safe studio-made glaze
• Choose from our wall of colors!- dozens of commercial glazes ready to paint
• Glaze your mug any which way, carefully painting on your glaze
• Add personalization to the bottom of your mug: a saying, a name, or a ready-made transfer image
• Wipe and clean off your mug so that it's ready for firing
• All materials, clay, and tools are included 
• This workshop will last 2 - 2 1/2 hours
• Your mugs will be fired and dishwasher safe for pick-up 4-6 weeks later.

A curated selection of wine, cheese, and nibbles will accompany your evening for a complete night out!
